1. Meditation can improve cognition
A 2018 study led by the University of California, Davis, Center for Mind and Brain, and published in the Journal of Cognitive Enhancement, discovered that increased ability to sustain attention is developed through regular practice of meditation, these benefits were present seven years later in the study’s follow-up. Increased cognition leads to improvements in the brain’s problem-solving and decision-making strategies, which supports critical thinking and crisis management.
2. Meditation can reduce stress and burnout
An immediate and long-proven benefit of meditation is reduced stress and a decreased level of cortisol in our brains and bodies. A 2013 study, also from the Center of Mind and Brain at UC Davis, confirmed the connection between mindfulness and cortisol and participants saw major benefits in only a few weeks of meditation. 3. Group meditation can lead to better collaboration
Group meditation in the workplace is already being used successfully to increase collaboration, innovation and quality of work. Pre-pandemic, meditation was beginning in workplace settings and in post-pandemic companies exploring these options in efforts to strengthen workplace relationships as people are returning to the workplace after 2 years of social distancing and isolation.
4. Meditation can boost memory.
The American Psychological Association (APA) studied the effects of meditation on the military as a way to explore its impact on memory. In this study, two separate military groups were studied, one that meditated regularly for eight weeks and the other that carried on with normal protocol. When both groups were placed under high amounts of stress, such as moments before deployment, the group that had not meditated exhibited a decrease in working memory over time while the group that had meditated regularly remained stable.
5. Meditation can curb emotional reactions In an early study also published by the APA, people who meditated and practiced mindfulness were able to step back from emotionally upsetting situations or tasks and were able to better focus compared to other participants who were introduced to the same content but had not meditated. WHY MEDITATE REGULARLY?
1. Manage stress, anxiety, and depression
A literature review conducted in 2014 assessed 47 mindfulness meditation trials that involved around 3,515 participants. The review concluded that meditation is a useful tool that helps relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. And not only do meditators feel less stressed, their levels of the “stress hormone” cortisol decrease measurably. Meditation can calm the mind and create peace within, so meditators can achieve balance and stop themselves being overcome with strong emotions, such as depression or anxiety.
2. Increased immunity
Studies have shown that regular meditation/relaxation and mindfulness exercises can boost lymphocytes, the super cell that improve the immune system. therefore creating resistance to viruses, tumors and illness.
3. Lowered blood pressure
According to a study reported in the British Medical Journal, patients who were regular practitioners of meditation had considerably lower blood pressure than those who did not. Experts believe that meditation reduces the body’s responsiveness to cortisol and other stress hormones, which is similar to how blood pressure reducing medications work. It’s one of meditation’s great health blessings.
4. Better sleep
In addition to teaching your body to relax, it also trains the mind to settle the attention on an object such as the breath and allow other thoughts and emotions to float by like clouds on a pleasant day. Harvard Medical School suggests that focusing on a phrase such as “breathe in calm, breathe out tension” beats counting sheep when it’s time to sleep.
